Can Porcelain Veneers Improve the Look of Crooked Teeth?
3/15/2023
If you have crooked teeth that make you feel self-conscious about your smile, you may think your only option is orthodontic treatment. However, the appearance of mildly crooked teeth can often be improved with porcelain veneers alone. As an added benefit of dental veneers, patients can simultaneously enhance the shape, size, and shade of their teeth. At Rabile Family Dentistry, Irving, TX dentist Dr. Hodan Rabile enjoys creating beautiful, straight smiles patients can feel confident about with a complete range of dental services, including porcelain veneers. Interested in learning more about how porcelain veneers may be used to correct crooked teeth? Let’s go.
The process of getting porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment that can be used to make a wide range of improvements to one or more of a patient’s teeth. A procedure involving porcelain veneers typically begins with preparation of the tooth, which may include removing a small portion of natural tooth material to accommodate the veneer and strengthen its bond with the tooth. Because modern porcelain veneers are exceptionally thin, not a great deal of natural enamel or material needs to be removed in the majority of cases. Next, impressions are made, and the veneers are created either on-site or in an off-site lab. While the veneers are being made, patients will wear temporary veneers to protect their teeth and preserve their appearance. Finally, the patient will return to have their temporary veneers removed, and the porcelain veneers will be bonded to the teeth.
What dental problems can be fixed with veneers?
Dental veneers are considered cosmetic in nature and do not necessarily “correct” structural issues. Instead, porcelain veneers can be used to conceal cosmetic concerns and give the patient a more attractive smile. Complaints that are commonly addressed with porcelain veneers include:
- Stained teeth
- Yellow teeth
- Tooth discoloration
- Chipped tooth
- Gap between teeth
- Uneven tooth length
- Short teeth
- Small teeth
- Crooked teeth
How do veneers help straighten your teeth?
Again, porcelain veneers do not alter any characteristics of the teeth themselves, but they can help to conceal many cosmetic concerns and improve the aesthetics of a patient’s smile. For mildly crooked or misaligned teeth, applying veneers to the surface of the teeth can help to create a more uniform, straight smile. In cases where a patient’s teeth are severely misaligned, crooked, or rotated, Dr. Rabile may recommend orthodontic treatment to first straighten the teeth. Once the teeth have been straightened with orthodontics, porcelain veneers can then be applied if the patient would like to address additional concerns, such as the size, shape, or shade of their teeth. During your initial consultation for straightening crooked teeth with veneers, Dr. Rabile will perform a thorough evaluation and exam to determine the most appropriate course of action for you.
